Festive opening: Friday, 19.11.2021 at 11:00
Zamenhof 6 Tel Aviv
Letters are nothing but random forms, taught us the Swiss linguist, Ferdinand de Saussure, who changed the world of modern linguistics as early as the 19th century, and coined the terms "signifier" and "signified". These concepts sound so familiar today, as if they have always been here. De Saussure emphasizes the separation between the physical plane of the sign, that is, the form, and the plane of meaning.
Calderon draws the Hebrew letters. It forges a personal relationship with each other, and in doing so pours into the content both religious and secular meanings and creates within it its magical world. She does this with the intention of giving them the meaning of the fruit of her heartfelt feelings and hopes that the viewer will connect to them and their meaning in accordance with his spiritual worldview and the inclinations of his heart. Calderon allows the viewer intuitive freedom of choice, while at the same time emphasizing her closeness to Judaism and the secrets of Kabbalah in her choice to paint the wind blowing from the earth upward, to heaven, depending on the direction of prayer.
Her works abound in powerful patches of color. She chooses a number of shades, dominating each letter, and control is rarely given to just one color. The Hebrew letters represent holiness for her, but not only. The artist testifies to a spiritual process, which she experienced with each letter individually. In the drawing of the letter "D-L-T" she envisioned doors carried in the wind in flight towards the sky. In drawing the letter "Y-N" she used meditation, which led to images flashing into her consciousness from the subconscious, and these aroused in her a desire to paint the anatomical structure of the eye in a realistic style. Drawing the letter "Z-Y-N" dives into the depths of Kabbalah properly for an obsessive preoccupation with the occult and the image of the elements of Kabbalah.
In the Hebrew language, every letter and every sound also has a meaning in the faith aspect. The letter "C-D-Y" and diving, for example, intuitively communicate the verse in the Book of Psalms (ZB, 13): The graphic image of the letter "N-W-N" is the signifier. As marked, the artist chose to paint lighted candles in order to light our way in the world.
Calderon worked on the letter drawings for five consecutive years, during which time she also decided to incorporate photographs within the letters, saturated with earth tones, fire, sky, wind and water. The photographs depict mainly religious symbols, some refer to Judaism and others mention mystical and other beliefs. When she uses all the content and symbols that link her to the letter she creates, she feels a strong desire to understand the meaning of the letters. Calderon testifies to a mystical experience, in which the letters began to dance in her head, when she was in a state of full awareness.
Looking at each and every letter, there are elements of abstract painting, evident in brushstrokes that create colorful spots, along with recognizable figurative images, which include female figures, trees in the fall, fire burning in flames, a woman's head in profile, and a male figure lying on the ground. Pregnant.
The creation of twenty-two letters of the alphabet was done with the intention of sharing and sharing personal perspectives with others.
Rossi Calderon was born in 1965 in Mexico City, where she lives and works today. Holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry, pharmacology and biology from the University of UNAM , Mexico. Following an encounter with an infinite reflection of abstract beauty, which she saw through a microscope during her studies, she decided to make a conversion and turned to painting and photography studies.
