קרדיט צלם - התמונות באדיבות זויה צ'רקסקי וגלריה רוזנפלד

17/12/2020 to - 21/01/2021

The name of the exhibition indicates software - ideas and topics that have occupied Zoya Cherkasky for the past decade, which she scribbles, writes and paints on papers. Some are used as sketches or preparation drawings for large works on canvas and some are paintings on paper that stand on their own. Zoya regularly deals with several topics in parallel. She studies them and collects visual materials, until these crystallize into a complete painting. Sometimes she goes back to ideas that have preoccupied her in the past, which have matured over time. The current exhibition seeks to shed light on the "behind the scenes" of the works and reveal a little of the making process, and it includes works in various stages of preparation, in which corrections, erasures and changes in the composition are sometimes seen.
The Soviet past continues to be a central theme in her work, but in a different way than is represented in the 'Soviet Childhood' project from 2018. There Zoya returns mainly to her private memories, while the new works deal with the collective memory - recreation, sports, films and cultural heroes. Two jobs, for example, painted Italian immigrants Nicola Sacco (Sacco) and Bartolomeo Vanzetti (Vanzetti), accused of double murder and executed Bmstz'ost in 1927. This affair waves and affect the public consciousness in the former Soviet Union, primarily due to the belief that the trial against them Huta motivated Anti-communists. In another painting, taking a historic liberty Zoya herself, and sat to tea musical pair revolutionary socialist Clara Zetkin (Zetkin) and Luxemburg (Luxemburg), who were in their time role model for millions of Soviet citizens.
In another series of paintings, Zoya describes scenes that are part of her daily routine and the environment near her home in Ramat Gan, and her studio in south Tel Aviv. Residents of Neve Sha'anan and the Shapira neighborhood - permanent and occasional - drug addicts, prostitutes, migrant workers and refugees. The mythical Bialik Street with its kiosks and lingerie stores, and on the other hand, ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods in Bnei Brak. The lifestyles of the ultra-Orthodox community, which are light years away from her lifestyle, intrigue and fascinate her. Alienation and mental distance stand in contrast to neighborliness and physical closeness. The border between Bnei Brak and Ramat Gan has recently been at the center of a public outcry over the Corona crisis and the fear of the residents of Ramat Gan about the "invasion" of the ultra-Orthodox into their territory.
The exhibition also features a series of new prints, made using the etching technique on metal. The works were created at the print workshop at Kibbutz Kabri during the past year. The etching technique, in which Zoya is experimenting for the first time, has become a significant part of her work. The complex work process requires precise planning and execution, as well as graphic vision, a steady hand and a clear and confident line.
In the past year, Ira Zoya has published two children's books. 'Mr. Simcha and Sasson' - is her second book shared with Galia Oz, the bride of the Prime Minister's Prize for Literature. The first librarian - 'When will our cat love us?' He was awarded the "Notebook" for outstanding work, and praised the critique of the wonderful text and the original and spectacular paintings. The protagonist of the second book, 'Tali Under the Table' by Tamar Weiss-Gabay, is a wise and rebellious girl who declares herself "I am a hedgehog" and refuses to go out under the family dining table. It is impossible not to notice the resemblance between the character of the naughty Tali and Zoya's five-year-old daughter. The original paintings from the children's books are displayed in "Rosie", the gallery's project space. Translated using Google translate.
