Name of the exhibition: Deep in the Surface
A kind of son of a dove

Curator: Galina Arbeli

The term "ornamentation" originates from the Latin word " ornare " which means "to decorate and adorn" but also "to arrange and organize". Since the dawn of culture the decoration expresses a basic need to embed an aesthetic human dimension through the rearrangement of an existing thing. The ornamentation can be characterized in three aspects: in terms of shape - the decoration is a system of repeating patterns at a uniform rate; In terms of purpose - the decoration is intended to beautify and decorate something else and therefore is not independent but subject to something that adorns, for example an object, building, text or painting; In terms of the treatment of the observer - the purpose of the decoration is to delight the observer's eye, to create in it an aesthetic visual comfort and thus to induce a pleasant atmosphere of satisfaction.

In the works on display in the exhibition, the artist Maayan Ben Yonah seeks to re-establish order in the world of decorations in which she has been working in recent years and to examine what happens to the object (decorated) when the shape intended to decorate it (function) emerges from the vessel's surface.

In the exhibition, Maayan takes the decoration models she works with, removes them from the surface of the tools they have decorated and gives them three-dimensional life, sometimes as an independent object independent of another tool and sometimes as a three-dimensional decoration that adorns a tool. During this process of dismantling, building and reassembling it changes the overall shape of the familiar objects and creates objects with animals and character that make up a new world that invites wandering. This artificial world, which evokes a sense of frozen nature, is in motion and invites the viewer to enter it, disengage from what is happening outside and indulge in what is happening inside the objects and between them, objects that the three-dimensional decoration gives them personality and character.

During this, the objects displayed in the exhibition return to the realms of nature, a return that is expressed both in their circular and rounded shapes and in the natural colors of the materials they are made of - the porcelain in its natural white color and the clay in its natural natural color. In addition, there is a tension between the delicacy of the porcelain and the roughness and roughness of the clay.

Thus the exhibition presents an artificial world that invites the viewer to wander and walk among its decorated buildings, observe them closely, marvel, peek and delve into their details, follow the movement that froze and decipher their structure while contemplating the artistic process of making the two-dimensional decoration Of the objects.

Decoration is a rejection of the dichotomy between nature and culture. It is a synthesizer of cultural expressions in the field of nature. It is easy to see how ceramicists will adopt such approaches to decoration, since ceramics itself involves the transformation of nature (clay) into a culture (pot).
