Sparks. Magical realism in the valley

Curators: Oz Zluf

Co-curator: Merav Sudai

Opening on Tuesday 25.8.2020 in a virtual event on the gallery's Facebook page.

The global emergency reality that has been occurring in recent months seemed at first almost imaginary. News sites were flooded with pictures of crowded places around the world in an abandoned state and the public confined to homes.

The isolation created a duality that ranged from loneliness and contentment, rest and harassment, concentration and unease. Fantastic reality. The work under the "Filter" of "Magical Realism" has allowed artists to actively create and shape reality, within the confines of the studio and the exhibition space.

"Magical Realism" challenges the explicit picture of reality and ranges from ethics to aesthetics. Its essence is a productive, value-based, aesthetic and ambitious position of the artist, and it is used in the exhibition as a characteristic from which people work and create in the gallery laboratory in Afula.

The exhibition was created as part of the "Local Legend" project led by Oz Zluf and Merav Sudai. The project formed a group consisting of professional and amateur artists and artists, multi-age and local cultural leaders. These create out of a sense of mission and change the cultural-artistic map in Israel, based on geosocial power centers. The artists come from all over the Jezreel Valley with its various settlements, development cities and towns, Arab villages and settlements, agricultural moshavim and kibbutzim.

The group works while critically learning the field of art, and its members create out of a commitment to change in an alternative ethic to the prevailing one: challenging the artist's isolation, dealing with the artist's exclusivity in the work, anti-commercialism and forming an active, political and social position in the work of art.

The Municipal Art Gallery in Afula is a unique institution, which has been renewed for the past four years and works to connect new audiences to the field of Israeli art. The gallery operates as a living, productive site that conducts urban and regional activities for artistic creation and for hosting original, leading and groundbreaking art initiatives in contemporary Israeli art . The exhibitions are all built and created in a long-term process in which the participating artists are hosted at the venue, maintain a symbiotic connection with the audience and the local community, and clarify the role of the "Israeli venue" in Israeli art.
