The Dionysian experience was one of the most essential experiences in the ancient world.
During the creative atmosphere of the Dionysian cult, the Canaanite, the initiators brought themselves to a state of ecstasy and release of passions, while temporarily breaking down social barriers. The climax of the cult is known as the pomphonium, which means turmoil, deafening noise, chaos. This is the stage during the worship of God Dionysus where religious ecstasy reaches its peak and leads to purification, refinement and transcendence.
The Dionysian experience is also associated with hedonism - a world view formulated by the fourth-century philosopher Epicurus, who placed hedonism as a value and purpose of life.
Interestingly, Dionysian imagery and motifs and contexts of ritual, initiation, purification, and catharsis exist openly or implicitly, consciously or unconsciously in the work of Israeli artists.
This exhibition has special significance in the space of Ilana Goor Museum, which is characterized by a kind of Dionysian sensuality. In this way, there is a unique and unusual dialogue between this exhibition and the permanent exhibition at the museum, about the Dionysian experience and the decadence, as a metaphor for the present time and place.
Each of the selected artists will present a certain aspect of the Dionysian aspect of life in today's Israel: questions about materialism and spirituality, the place of worship in the contemporary era, passions, latterness, decadence, and more.
The one-time link between the works in this exhibition and the exhibition Ilana Goor Museum and the title of the exhibition "Life Dionysi" raise questions about the nature of life in the current time and place: Is this life hedonism with limitations, hedonism within borders and consciousness; Or is the Israeli reality a kind of decadent, unbridled decadent Dionism, the blurring of reality in a pink screen in an intoxicating dionysian bachnilia?
