Following its dictionary definition, the purpose of «Archaeology» as a science and as a methodology is to locate, study, and preserve human history. In this way, the field of research attempts to define and to describe a continuous historical sequence by analyzing similarities and differences, in order to classify and characterize human cultures based on real objects. These actual objects, discovered intentionally or accidentally, from the depths of the earth or from the seabed, are at the center of the «archaeological metaphor» whose purpose is to illuminate a spotlight and to create a parallel between the archeologist's practice and that of the artist. As such, the artistic object obtains its finished form from the thought of those real archaeological objects, and mainly by the way they are revealed. The exhibition Excavation Mark! Reveal Preserve Glorify In its group arrangement, will ask to diagnose and thereby emphasize the growing tendency of contemporary artists to walk on the path of the «archaeological metaphor» as an artistic practice that strives to expose and preserve ideas, objects of research, and different ideologies through the action of excavation.

The selection of the various artists is based mainly on the practice they deal with as part of the process of their artistic object. The works do not simply presents the actual archaeological object, but rather illustrate a metaphorical excavation in the depths of history and reality, in order to reveal, preserve and, glorify various phenomena, ideas, and ideologies. The «archeological metaphor», in parallel to the exposure of the artistic practice, raises questions about the continuity of historical events, questions which try to reveal fixed timelines that often lead to concealment. Their action seeks to unravel all the threads woven by the patience of historians by multiplying differences, blurring lines of communication, and tries to make the passages more difficult and thus more challenging.
