Don’t touch my anxiety
Curated by Doron Furman

Instead of calming and soothing anxiety, the artist expresses it, gives it a voice. Art offers relief from the burning fire, from difficulty and distress. It does not always seek to convey something to another person. Art does not need to be radical or kicking to properly do its job; it needs to be free.

Anxiety is not always a primary emotion, sometimes it is the result of other hushed feelings. Our anxiety can represent the distress of limitation and the imprisoned thought of our capacity and our right to express who we are within our environment. Artistic expression of anxiety has the potential for personal healing, but also as a catalyst for change. Don’t touch my anxiety.

In cultures ruled by free-market and politics of alienation, fear and division, free expression of our subjectivity threatens homogenized peace and is therefore shut down and policed. Sociologist Eva Illouz (2008) considers psychology as colluding with the policing of emotions and rebellion: we are told to calm down, to tone down, to moderate our fire. This fire can create change and transformation.

As artists, we do not necessarily seek to fix ourselves or the world around us. We do seek to express. Softly and powerfully, the beautiful and the ugly. Art speaks the anxiety as it is, rebelling against the shutting down of feelings. Do not touch it!

Today, in the state of Israel, when frequent attempts are made to sweeten art with political saccharine, denying it of its basic function – to speak the truth as it is, challenging, questioning and critical. Today we wish to remember this basic fact. Art does not belong to the government, it is not here to placate or please. It challenges attempts to calming down, frightening or policing dissatisfaction, difficulty, yearning or urges. Art fights for our right to be anxious. Don’t touch my anxiety.
Central Gallery in Tel Aviv’s central station is an anxious space, exposed to social margins and unpleasant cultural truths, which are easy to ignore. It is exactly from here that we invited artists to bring their anxious artwork, to give space for expressing anxiety through art. Show us your anxiety. We shall give it space but will not touch it.
