Guides: Field Guides in the Mirror of Contemporary Israeli Art

The dictionary definition of "field guide" refers to data organized in the centuries-long familiar form of a book: "a book for the identification of animals, birds, flowers, or other things in their natural environment." This definition does not include up to date contemporary tools, which enable one to identify one's object of research through drawn or photographed distinctive marks using application software, smart phones and virtual and interactive databases. Thus, a field guide is also a space of both the rule and the exception of (vegetal, animal and inanimate) families and of those who are excluded from its bounds/limits/definition. Postmodern distrust goes as far as stating that any definition also strives to enable and magnify, or – alternatively – to exclude and hide. Thus, according to this conception, contemporary field guides are not only objective encyclopedic knowledge bases on certain components of the world, but also manipulative ideological, political archives.

The exhibition Guides refers to and displays works by some botanical and zoological artists and nature photographers who have participated in the production of field guides in the past and in the present.
Alongside them, there are contemporary artist which present a reflective, subjective, nostalgic, or critical new gaze, which brings forth works that re-create something new with visual, graphic and textual components borrowed from field guides. It is related to and influenced by both the fear for the survival of nature as it is and an indifference and denial, which accompany this discourse.
