Ensemble in Five Voices is not merely a title, but is also a concept and an essence. What stood before me as both curator and a participant in the exhibition, was a musical experience I had undergone as a listener and viewer, in which I found great pleasure and which taught me an important lesson.

Two violins, a viola and two cellos, at the hands and souls of five musicians, four male and one female, joining together to perform Schubert’sformilier Quintet in c.d. 956. This, for me, was an experience of both resonance and gaze. This piece, as was composed by Schubert, is undoubtedly a beautiful one, but what made that evening so special for me, was the way in which the collection of dots and lines scribbled and sequenced over the pages of the music notebook, were brought alive out of the instruments, each instrument and the musician playing it; the way in which each of them maintained their own unique voice, while at the same time attentively listening to the others, mixing amongst them, and flowing with and against them to form a single harmonic piece.

The way in which the musicians listened to each other was not only through the sounds - climbing and sliding, attacking and retreating, pounding and stroking, storming and soothing - but also through the glances, hints and subtle body movements and through their hearts.

This unity, preserving within it the existence of the individual and each individual giving his voice to create the whole, this delightful and exciting musical experience I had gone through that evening in the concert hall, has faced me with a true challenge when I was invited to curate and present my work in the exhibition.

The selection of the participating artists for the exhibition - Orith Youdovich, Jennifer Bloch, Yaeli Gabriely, Lili Sheer - was done out of a deep love and appreciation for their work, as well as for the materials out of which their works were constructed and composed, for the different worlds they bring into their works and for the intention that the integration of their works on the gallery wall will arouse a complete and comprehensive experience in the gallery space and will enrichen the connection between painting, drawing, photography and music. Silence is a voice and a voice that is silent.

To fulfill this intention we conducted continuous dialogues over the duration of the time preparing the exhibition. Also, I addressed each of the artists and asked them to choose out of my artworks - existing or new - the ones they would like to have presented alongside theirs. Thus, Jennifer, Orith, Yael and Lili became participants in the curating process.

Five voices in different shades and colors, sustaining their identity, each voice in it’s own way, out of respect for the history and traditions of art and thought. Five voices that are a ‘present’ carrying in it the memory of the past as well as the look towards the future. Five voices reverberating on the walls and between them as a single comprehensive piece.
