Deborah Weiss - Holy Works
Solo exhibition at Tova Osman Gallery in Tel Aviv
Festive opening: Friday, 4.6.2021 at: 12:00
100 Ben Yehuda St., Tel Aviv
"Man's authentic connection to his soul must be through the roots of his own culture. To meet his journey through the cultural and cultural journey of his Jewish heritage. The way man looks at his life story is actually related to the sources, the roots we came into and not just the personal stories acquired in our years."
Today's world is undergoing significant changes in various levels of existence, from the individual to higher dimensions or universal literature in human consciousness. Humanity experiences inspiring but at the same time terrifying challenges for both body and mind. We have the challenge of finding a match between the inner development and the scientific and technological forces of our time. Some of us may find our destiny within social and political structures or in the challenges found in: education economics science, religion, medicine and industry. It is the art that encourages the imagination and challenges the spiritual-personal aspect that reflects both the individual and society. Art is a gateway to the sublime and a reflection of the here and now, and now is the time for growth and renewal.
Deborah is a multidisciplinary artist, with experience and many years of experience in exhibitions and projects, who is now at the height of her journey into the depths of her soul. Reading and searching Deborah's works is for a universal language, the discovery of an artistic voice that all human beings can connect to. In this sense the essence of this exhibition is a statement of intent about the unique role of art in inspiring and thinking that may bring about a change in the viewer.
Her works are a substrate of evidence. Evidence of symbols, rituals and images around the twelve tribes. These are paintings that refer to the collective memory of biblical themes, with the earthliness seen through her paintings incorporating the basic understanding of time. A passing time but also at the same time eternal and familiar. Ancient time and time in a contemporary season. A reminder of our origin from the dust and the dirt. The spiritual journey of our lives, while taking responsibility for the present, recognizing the past and relating to building the future.
A recurring image in Deborah's work is of a spiral held by the wandering Jew.
This is a figure of doubt, doubting the artist's own reflection, a reference to the self-awareness woven into the paintings and seen through them. The spiral is perhaps one of the spiritual symbols from the beginning of humanity, despite the fact that each culture gives the spiral different meanings. The fact that the spiral can be found in many works from around the world - Europe Asia Africa and America. The prevailing belief is that the spiral represents the movement that originates in life experiences. Experiences which symbolize the discovery and internalization of the occult.
Says Weiss: "During my many journeys, I have created in an inner gathering, works that connect to a series of prayers and supplications that resonate with an archaic, contemporary and future reality - 'sacred works'.
In my works I combine layers of fabrics, ropes, clay, oil paints and copper and gold leaves that are woven into symbolic stamps?
The spiral thus symbolizes change and growth. The ancient spiral will express what the world will become. It is a symbol of the feminine energy, of the fertility and womb that carries and is responsible at the same time for the present, and for building the future. The spiral is a symbol of an intelligent and creative process in which the action of creating the spiral releases the intellect and also creates fertile ground for change. All this is evident in Deborah's works. The richness and sensual use of materials - fabrics, fibers, color, gold and layers of textures that incorporate inspiring images. The repeated interweaving of images such as the twelve tribes of Israel represents and emphasizes the diversity from which humanity has grown. A reminder for all of us to seek uniqueness in all human beings, in all tribes, in all voices. Humanity is constantly advancing but it is a spiral progress that can never occur in isolation from the past.
