Sima Levin Artist, designer, illustrator, painter, draftsman, and engraver - conveys in this exhibition through paper and its injury the light and spirit in their philosophical and physical meaning. The personal stories and love of nature are woven together in the laborious work of weeks and sometimes months of perforating the paper with a needle.
In retrospect the choice of needle as a drawing pencil is not accidental. Sima's mother was a seamstress who prevented her from touching the needle lest she be injured or as Sima says "I will not stick to the needle, the sleeping beauty". But the burst of creativity and the search for another way to draw and paint connected Sima to the needle.
The drawing on paper begins with images that Sima creates from flowers, plants, insects and elements from nature that go through sketches in different techniques until they reach the perforation and injury of the paper that creates a final narrative. "I research and examine those around me in great detail and give special attention to every grain, stone, branch and leaf. The tactile contact with the soil and plants is very important to me," Sima Levin. With the help of the hole, Sima injures the paper and creates a fascinating visual, sensory, intellectual and textual story. Influenced by her inner reality, past memories, longings, fears and hopes.
When viewers look at the works from a distance they see a large white surface. As you get closer to the surface, dozens of details are revealed. In further approach the small hole becomes larger and loses its meaning within the story and becomes an individual leading the wind and light. Spirit and light have a deep physical and spiritual meaning in Sima's presented stories that constitute a way of life, thinking and creation in every detail of her life.
Sima Levin was born and raised in Chisinau, Moldova and in 1974 immigrated to Israel. For many years she ran an independent graphic design studio "Graphic's". In the late 1980s, she illustrated children's and youth books from the Keter publishing house. Sima specializes in stabilization, drawing, figurative painting, and specializes in printing and sculpture techniques. Today she lives and works in Afula.
Participated in dozens of group exhibitions and quite a few solo exhibitions.
