The exhibition includes oil paintings, a series of watercolor drawings and a video work, all dealing with the image of the decaying, consumed body; the body that devours and is itself devoured. In her oil paintings the body is shown in the entirety of its material presence, occupying the center of the image. Itzhaky's figures are muscular, heavy, their skin is sunburned. In the watercolor series a different body appears - floating, permeable and liquid. The cheerful colors and the naïve drawings disguise the dark content that brings together imagery of religious rituals with fantasies of pleasure and pain. In the video work Meditation on a Corpse a dog is seen devouring a 'body' on its muscles, bones and organs, all made of colorful confetti and paper. It is a playful, delightful, representation of what is perceived in the Judeo-Christian tradition to be the most cursed destiny: death without burial; the remains of a man turned into food for wild animals. The name of the exhibition is an equivocal quote from the book of Ezekiel (11:3). It is a metaphor denoting a meaning and its opposite; an illusion of safety and a prophecy of destruction, collapsed together one in the graphic metaphor. It points to the close, dangerous, connection between the body and the place it occupies. The place in Itzhaky's works is the wasteland at the outskirts of the city – the empty yards, the neglected fields. The vegetations and the animals in her works – the castor plant, wasps, seagulls, dogs – feed on human waste. Itzhaky creates an image of life that thrives on the border between the city and the wilderness, the stronghold of the lonely and the outcast. location - Hezi Cohen Gallery Time - 08/06/2017 to - 15/07/2017 Exhibition opening - 08/06/2017, שעה - 20:00 Link - http://hezicohengallery.com/exhibitions/118/2017-06-08_%F2%EC%EE%E4%20%E9%F6%E7%F7%E9/ |
